All research can benefit from first-hand experience and is sometimes found lacking because of the absence of such input or advice. It can provide the necessary checks and balances to ensure that theory and practice entwine.
Effective and thorough research could, in many cases, negate the need for many of the other sevices offered here. Unfortunately when financial pressures come to bear it is frequently research budgets that suffer. A lesser product,
service or procedure often results and the costs in terms of returns, complaints and recalls may far outweigh the money saved at the research stage.
Since 1996 David Townsend has been campaigning for greater consumer and regulatory awareness of the dangers of tealight candles (it was such a fire that led to the deaths of a woman and two firefighters in Hertfordshire in 2005). This followed original research conducted by David Townsend and widely published. There has been great success with media awareness and control but effective regulatory action has not yet been forthcomming.
